Men In Sheds Bedford
We are very pleased to have artists from Men In Sheds Bedford participate in The MS Therapy Centre Pop-Up Art Exhibition & Sale 2024.
For the last eighteen months the group has been running a session based around watercolour painting, organised by Cllr Terri Conway. It has proven to be very popular with over a dozen members routinely attending.
Men in Sheds Bedford was formed in 2012 as a not-for-profit association with charitable purposes. In 2017, it became a registered charity with the Charity Commission (1174339). Currently it has over eighty members.
The charity is an initiative that provides a space for people to socialise, learn new skills, and share experiences, work on group projects, or their own projects, while also promoting mental well-being.
Cllr Steve Conway
Cllr Steve Conway is currently the Chairman of Men In Sheds Bedford. Steve took up art when he retired some eight years ago after a thirty-three year career as a Broadcast Engineer for the BBC. He has a passion for science fiction, particularly Star Trek (The Original Series) and is currently working with coloured pencils and airbrushing.
Cllr Terri Conway
Cllr Terri Conway took up art when she retired eleven years ago after a career in education, where she was a head teacher for a Pupil Referral Unit. Realising that you must keep active in retirement, she took a City and Guilds in Mixed Media. Terri specialised in Chinese brush painting, before moving on to watercolour painting, coloured pencil, and recently airbrushing. Terri has a particular taste for Art Nouveau and her work is often influenced by this.
Geoff Wicks
Geoff Wicks is retired from a career in IT within the engineering sector and has lived in Bedford for over 40 years. He has always enjoyed arts and crafts, especially painting and drawing. He recently joined Men In Sheds last year and has benefitted from the tuition and guidance of Terri Conway in her weekly watercolour classes. He also enjoy monthly sessions with Bedford Urban Sketchers and has now started to paint for family & friends. It has become a very relaxing & rewarding hobby for him in his retirement.
Geza Ferenczi
Geza Ferenczi has been a member of Men In Sheds for nearly three years. Geza escaped from the community block in the 1950s. His primary trade is toolmaking, and he finished his career teaching in workshops. He produces work that is both drawn and painted. Geza is also skilled at using Men In Sheds Bedford’s CNC machine.
Gillie Sharp
Drawing and painting is a habit that is an important part of my life. It is a continuing challenge, as I am never satisfied with my work - and that's a good thing, because I have to keep working at it! I believe that drawing is the fundamental foundation and you can never get enough practice. Watercolour sometimes threatens to defeat me, but I am undeterred!
Desiree Bashi
Illustrated books and browser pieces
Hello! I am Desiree. I have been living in Bedford for almost 20 years!
My heritage is glazed in many coats of Italian and Iranian culture. Over the past nine years, I have become the author and illustrator of two self-published books, contributing to the current literature with underrepresented languages. I painted in oil and watercolour artwork exhibited throughout the UK. I perform and choreograph Classical Indian Dance pieces that tell a story.. Most recently I have worked on “Museum for a Day” a heritage and community project, bringing to life the biography of objects dear to Bedfordians, through audio and written records - that have been gathered into “one” day exhibition. My passion is to create a holistic vision to inspire others to enjoy different cultures toward personal and collective enrichment, and I do this best when combining art, dance, languages and storytelling together.
Salvatore Spinelli
Salvatore Spinelli has been a member of Men In Sheds Bedford for a little over a year. Initially he wanted to gain more computer skills, however he switched over to attending the watercolour class instead. Salvatore has probably made the most progress as an artist since he started attending the classes.
David Radcliffe joined Men In Sheds a six months ago and is so enthusiastic about our Watercolour session class, he refuses to take a coffee break. Aside from painting and drawing, David is an expert in Lapidary, which is stone polishing.
