I've spent many winters in a small coastal village in the Basque country in south west France. I trained as a painter but chose etching as the medium for this series as though I love to use colour, black and white can be so expressive and dramatic. The village, once a fishing port, is on the Atlantic so the weather is often wild and exhilarating and I felt etching would capture the atmosphere. I enjoy the process of traditional etching, basically unchanged for hundreds of years; as is the village, and of course, the sea.
