Art exhibition featuring original works for sale by local and national artists at the MS Therapy Centre.
Close by Catherine's Cross
Forty years ago, Kit Williams wrote a best-selling book called ‘Masquerade’ that sparked a massive treasure hunt by readers across the world to solve the clues in the book and find a golden hare treasure. This was eventually found in Ampthill at the foot of Katherine of Aragon’s Cross.
In 2019, local artist Karen Mangold was commissioned to paint an image celebrating the 40th anniversary of the work.
The MS Therapy Centre is delighted that Karen has kindly donated one of only 40 limited edition prints of this work to our Pop-Up Art Exhibition, and Kit Williams has donated a signed first edition copy of Masquerade.
The brief for the painting was to include Katherine’s Cross and a hare lit by moonlight. The original painting has gold leaf subtly placed on the edge of Morris the hare’s ears (as named by its new owner), just catching the moonlight. The newt appears because a protected colony resides in the aged brick core of Katherine’s Cross.
Masquerade40 celebrations started with the launch on 23rd March in Ampthill, when Karen’s painting was unveiled by the Ampthill Mayor. The anniversary celebration is into full swing, and being really embraced by local residents, with a whole year of different events using Masquerade as the theme.
Masquerade celebrations extend far beyond Ampthill. The book is loved all over the world, and sales of Karen’s limited edition prints have gone to USA, Australia, Worcester, Brighton, and Cornwall, as well as locally here in Bedfordshire.
Thank you so much to Karen Mangold and Kit Williams for donating their work.
